The Philadelphia 76ers observed promising potential from rookie center Adem Bona during the 2024-25 season, where injuries forced him into significant playing time (58 games, 11 starts). Bona, a second-round pick, demonstrated strong shot-blocking ability, ranking fourth in block percentage among players with at least 750 minutes, and showed flashes of being a capable NBA rim-runner and rebounder.
Despite Bona's unexpected opportunity and positive signs, the 76ers have significantly deepened their center rotation during the offseason. They retained veteran Andre Drummond, drafted highly-regarded college big man Johni Broome (who possesses more offensive skill than Bona), signed free agent Trendon Watford to back up Joel Embiid, and added Dominick Barlow on a two-way contract.
This influx of players at the center position, several with higher pedigree or more experience, clearly signals the team's view of Bona. The front office actions indicate they do not believe Bona is ready for a major role this season, viewing him instead as a project for future growth. Consequently, after playing substantial minutes as a rookie, Bona is now buried on the depth chart and is expected to spend most of his second season developing with the G-League's Delaware Blue Coats. The organization has made it clear that it is not "Adem Bona time" in Philadelphia for the upcoming season.
