Despite the Las Vegas Aces' .500 record (13-13) through 26 games, star player A'ja Wilson remains a leader. The WNBA has appointed the two-time champion and three-time MVP as the first-ever Global Ambassador for the Jr. WNBA. In this role, Wilson will spearhead efforts to inspire and empower young girls through basketball, leadership, and community involvement.
Wilson's responsibilities include representing the Jr. WNBA at major NBA and WNBA events, conducting on-court instruction, and participating in off-court programs focused on confidence, wellness, and personal development. She will also serve as a Strategic Advisor to the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Court of Leaders, which mentors top high school players.
The Jr. WNBA targets girls aged 5-17 with initiatives like Belonging in Basketball and the Vision Box, designed to keep them engaged in sports. Wilson, who once doubted her own basketball path, aims to help the next generation see what's possible, stating, "If I can be seen in those spaces and make it look real for them, then I’ve done my job." New York Liberty's Candice Haynes praised Wilson's relatability and impact, noting she "already lives the mission" as a champion on and off the court.
During the recent All-Star Weekend, Wilson and other WNBA players led clinics and vision board workshops for over 100 girls, creating what organizers hope is lasting inspiration. Wilson expressed her desire to see one of the participants eventually take her place. With Wilson leading the Jr. WNBA initiative, the program aims to build not just athletes, but future leaders.
