Anonymity, ascent, stardom and combustion: Theo Hernandez’s AC Milan journey

Theo Hernandez has concluded his six-year tenure at AC Milan, with his permanent transfer to Al-Hilal confirmed by both clubs, marking a departure that contrasts with his successful spell. He joined Milan from Real Madrid in the 2019 summer transfer window, accumulating 262 appearances, 34 goals, and 45 assists during his time. Key achievements include being instrumental in the team's 2021-22 Serie A Scudetto victory under Stefano Pioli, reaching the Champions League semi-finals the following season, and winning the Supercoppa Italiana in the most recent campaign.

His arrival at Milan involved Paolo Maldini, then the club's technical director, who personally flew to Ibiza to convince Hernandez to join over interest from Bayer Leverkusen. Maldini's direct approach, highlighting Milan's project, led to a €20 million transfer, with Hernandez drawn to the legend's involvement. A standout moment came in December 2020 with a 93rd-minute winning header against Lazio, which kept Milan atop Serie A.

In the 2020-21 season, Hernandez emerged as one of Serie A's best left-backs, contributing eight goals and seven assists as Milan challenged for the title. His partnership with Rafael Leao on the left flank, nicknamed "Theao," became highly effective, considered among Europe's most formidable duos.
