The Connecticut Sun announced on Sunday morning that guard Bria Hartley has suffered a season-ending injury after tearing the meniscus in her right knee during a recent practice. Hartley, 32, was the team's fourth-leading scorer this season, averaging 8.9 points, 3.1 assists, and 2 rebounds per game while shooting 36.7% from three-point range.
Hartley's injury is part of a broader trend of season-ending injuries among WNBA guards this year. Just this month, Indiana Fever guards Aari McDonald (broken foot), Sydney Colson (torn ACL), and Sophie Cunningham (torn MCL) were also ruled out for the remainder of the season. Last week, Dallas Wings rookie JJ Quinerly suffered a sprained ACL and was declared out for the year.
Earlier in the season, Dallas Wings guard Ty Harris and Golden State Valkyries All-Star Kayla Thornton sustained season-ending knee injuries. Last month, veteran Chicago Sky point guard Courtney Vandersloot tore her ACL, ending her season as well. Perhaps the most high-profile case is Caitlin Clark, who has been limited to just 13 games due to quad and groin injuries; while not officially ruled out, her status for the rest of the season remains uncertain.
Hartley, who was having a strong comeback season after two years out of the league, now joins the growing list of guards whose seasons have ended prematurely due to injury.
