Houston Astros General Manager Dana Brown announced that All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes's right hamstring strain is "a little bit more severe than we projected." Brown expressed difficulty being optimistic about the situation. Paredes is seeking a second opinion, and the team expects to know more about his prognosis within the week. He has not been at the ballpark since suffering the injury on July 19th.
Paredes is one of nine Astros position players currently on the injured list, a major-league high, with five being Opening Day starters. His injury appears the most serious within that group. Brown's comments raise significant concern about Paredes returning this season, which could alter the team's approach before Thursday's trade deadline.
Brown stated the team is prioritizing acquiring hitters ("bats") while also remaining in the market for a starting pitcher before the deadline. However, Houston's lack of top-end prospect capital makes winning bidding wars difficult. Offsetting Paredes's absence is a challenge, as he leads the team with 19 home runs and ranks near the top in on-base and slugging percentage.
The team is specifically looking for a left-handed bat, with a preference for an infielder but openness to an outfielder. Since Paredes's injury, utility player Mauricio Dubón has started most games at third base. Brown also hinted that if the Astros acquire an outfielder, they could potentially move Jose Altuve back to second base from left field.
