The Chicago Bulls and head coach Billy Donovan have agreed to a multiyear contract extension, as reported by ESPN's Shams Charania. The organization views Donovan as "a leader within the Bulls organization," expressing continued confidence in his leadership despite recent team performance challenges.
Donovan joined the Bulls before the 2020-21 season. After an initial 31-41 record, the 2021-22 campaign showed promise with a 26-10 start and first place in the Eastern Conference. However, Lonzo Ball's January knee injury derailed momentum, resulting in a 46-36 finish and first-round playoff exit. Subsequent seasons saw consistent play-in tournament appearances: 40-42 in 2022-23, 39-43 in 2023-24, and another play-in loss in 2024-25 despite roster changes including Zach LaVine's departure and Josh Giddey's arrival.
This extension follows recent front-office contract renewals for executive Arturas Karnišovas and GM Marc Eversley, as previously reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Donovan brings a decorated coaching background, having won two NCAA championships at Florida (2006-07) and reaching four Final Fours. His NBA tenure includes five playoff appearances with Oklahoma City Thunder before joining Chicago.
The 60-year-old Hall of Fame inductee (Class of 2025) now faces the franchise's long-standing challenge: guiding the Bulls to their first NBA Finals since 1998. Management believes his proven leadership and basketball acumen can elevate the team to championship contention.
