Rookie running back Eri Olarubofin had a standout performance for the Calgary Dinos, rushing for a career-high 155 yards on 17 carries and scoring the game-winning touchdown with just 52 seconds remaining to secure a 23-19 victory over Alberta on Friday evening.
Despite missing veteran running back Matthieu Clarke, the Dinos' offensive line created significant opportunities for Olarubofin and fellow first-year player Jibreel Yahaya, who rushed for 58 yards on just six carries in his debut. Overall, Calgary amassed 215 rushing yards on 24 attempts, with both touchdowns coming from their dominant ground game.
The game was closely contested, with a quiet first half ending 3-3 after both teams had touchdowns nullified by penalties. Calgary took a 6-3 lead in the third quarter on a 47-yard field goal by Vince Triumbari, but Alberta responded with a touchdown to go ahead 10-6.
Calgary quickly regained the lead at 13-10 with a touchdown run by Evan Smith late in the third quarter, and extended it to 16-10 early in the fourth on another Triumbari field goal. Alberta then went back ahead 19-16 with a 64-yard touchdown pass with 3:39 remaining, setting the stage for Olarubofin's late game-winning score.
With the win, Calgary improves to 2-1 on the season, while Alberta falls to 0-3 under first-year head coach Stevenson Bone. The victory marks Calgary's 12th consecutive win in Edmonton and their third win in the last four meetings against their provincial rivals.
