The Washington Commanders are being encouraged to make a significant trade for New York Jets running back Breece Hall, following an earlier surprising running back trade this season. Analyst Josh Weil proposed on October 6 that the Commanders trade a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Jets in exchange for Hall and a 2026 seventh-round pick, citing the team's need for experienced depth after Austin Ekeler's season-ending injury.
Weil highlighted that acquiring Hall would create a dynamic "two-headed monster" in the backfield alongside rookie standout Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who currently leads the league with 6.6 yards per carry. Hall's versatility as a strong pass-catcher would complement Croskey-Merritt, who is less involved in the passing game, and could elevate the Commanders' offense to better challenge the Philadelphia Eagles for the division title.
The trade rationale is strengthened by Hall's potential fit and current situation. Despite being a second-round pick in 2022 and showing promise early in his career, Hall has been underutilized with the winless Jets and is coming off seasons where he didn't reach 1,000 rushing yards, though he consistently surpassed 1,350 scrimmage yards thanks to his receiving skills. Adding Hall would provide crucial depth beyond current backups Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez, help manage Croskey-Merritt's workload to avoid a rookie wall, and support the Commanders' playoff aspirations after their NFC Championship Game appearance last season.
