The Dallas Cowboys have undergone changes in their backfield this offseason, adding two experienced running backs, Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, who will compete for the starting role as training camp begins this week.
Insiders discussed the competition, with Dallas reporter Tommy Yarrish predicting Sanders will win the starting job. Yarrish believes Sanders has the most "juice" left and benefits from a fresh start after struggling with the Panthers, appearing more explosive than others in initial padless practices, though the true hierarchy will emerge in camp.
Sanders was a notable second-round pick for the Philadelphia Eagles. His rookie year saw him gain 818 rushing yards and 509 receiving yards. He became a full-time starter by year two, consistently exceeding 750 rushing yards, and had a career-best 2022 season with 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns, playing a major role in the Eagles' Super Bowl run.
After the Super Bowl loss, Sanders signed a lucrative four-year deal with Carolina but underperformed, rushing for 432 yards in 2023 and only 205 yards in 11 games in 2024. The Panthers released him this offseason, and the Cowboys signed him to a one-year contract.
Sanders will battle Javonte Williams, formerly of the Denver Broncos. Williams played 54 games over four seasons in Denver, averaging nearly 600 rushing yards per season, including 513 yards and four touchdowns last year.
The Cowboys have several options for their backfield: choosing a primary starter between Sanders and Williams, utilizing a committee approach with both, or potentially exploring the trade market if the initial approaches are unsuccessful.
