David Martindale: Livingston boss to feature on BBC prison debate

David Martindale, the manager of Livingston, is set to appear on BBC Scotland's Debate Night to contribute to a discussion on prison reform, drawing from his personal experiences. He was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison in 2006 after admitting to drugs and money laundering charges, and he will join a panel that includes two MSPs, an MP, and a journalist for the Question Time-style show in Bathgate.

Following his release from prison, Martindale transitioned into football coaching, having previously been a youth player for Motherwell and Rangers. He joined Livingston's coaching staff in 2014 and became the manager in 2020, making him the longest-serving manager among current Scottish top-flight bosses. He expressed that while discussing politics is outside his comfort zone, he values the opportunity to share his real-life insights into the prison system and rehabilitation.

Martindale emphasized that his firsthand experience of incarceration and reintegration into society provides him with an educated perspective on prison reform. He actively engages in efforts to prevent re-offending by giving talks and responding to requests via social media and letters sent to the club. He remains committed to making himself available for such discussions, believing that sharing his past can benefit others and contribute positively to the debate.
