Toronto FC secured a dramatic 1-1 draw against league-leading Philadelphia Union on Saturday, scoring a late equalizer. Deandre Kerr headed home a cross from newly signed Malik Henry in the 91st minute to pull Toronto level. The goal was set up by another new designated player, Djordje Mihailovic, who found Henry in space on the right flank; Henry then delivered a cross into the box where Kerr outmaneuvered defender Jakob Glesnes and beat goalkeeper Andre Blake with a downward header.
Philadelphia had taken an early lead in the 4th minute through a slick counterattack after Richie Laryea lost possession. The Union moved the ball quickly, and Tai Baribo found an unmarked Indiana Vassilev, who slotted a low shot past Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran for his third goal of the season.
Toronto, trailing early, regrouped and avoided further damage in the first half, growing into the game as it progressed. They nearly equalized in the 83rd minute when Blake made a tremendous save to stop Kevin Long's shot off a Mihailovic corner. Philadelphia thought they had doubled their lead in the 56th minute when Baribo headed home a Kai Wagner free kick after a scramble, but the goal was ruled offside by video review, a decision Philadelphia coach Bradley Carnell disputed.
Coach Robin Fraser praised his team's "gutsy performance" and resolve for not quitting after conceding an early "pretty poor goal." Despite Philadelphia outshooting Toronto 11-9, both teams had four shots on target. New signing Djordje Mihailovic, playing his first game with minimal training, started up front and earned praise from Fraser for his work rate and defensive effort as well as his attacking contribution.
