Lionel Messi expressed frustration with Major League Soccer (MLS) after returning from a suspension, stating it negatively impacted his fitness. Messi and Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba were both suspended for one game for skipping the MLS All-Star Game, a decision Messi was reportedly "incredibly upset" about.
After missing a 0-0 draw with FC Cincinnati due to the suspension, Messi returned for a Leagues Cup match against Atlas. He provided two assists in the 2-1 win, including setting up the 96th-minute winner. However, Messi admitted struggling physically during the game, attributing it to the heat and the enforced rest from the suspension.
Messi stated, "The truth is that it was difficult with the heat, and not having played the other day. Even if [the rest] seems better, for me it’s worse because I need to compete." He explained, "I feel good physically the more matches I play and get into rhythm. The other day they didn’t let me compete, and I felt it in the first half."
This controversial suspension has intensified speculation about Messi's long-term future with Inter Miami. While his contract runs until the end of 2025 and club officials are confident about an extension, there have been numerous reports linking him with a potential exit from MLS. Possible destinations mentioned include a return to Europe or a move to Saudi Arabia, with Italian club Como recently being linked before their president dismissed the rumors.
