Erling Haaland humorously demonstrated his awareness of an English football meme by deflecting an attempt to bait him into insulting Wolverhampton. A fan sent the Manchester City striker, relaxing in his hotel before facing Wolves, a Snapchat message asking, "What do you think of the city of Wolverhampton?" Haaland, grinning, reposted the message with his reply: "Hahahaha I know what you’re trying to do here."
The fan's question referenced an incident involving Chelsea player Noni Madueke exactly 12 months prior. While in Wolverhampton for a match against Wolves, Madueke posted on Instagram, tagging his location and writing, "Everything about his place is s***." Although he quickly deleted the story, screenshots circulated widely. Madueke then posted, "Damn wrong Instagram account... You lot are fast," suggesting it was a mistake.
Despite facing intense booing from the majority of the Wolves crowd at Molineux Stadium the very next day, Madueke delivered an exceptional performance. He scored his first career hat-trick, netting three goals in just 14 second-half minutes, and was instrumental in Chelsea's 6-2 away victory. The England winger was booed from his first touch onwards during the Premier League clash.
Following his outstanding performance, Madueke publicly apologized. He stated post-match, "Listen, I just want to apologise to anyone I offended. It’s just a human mistake, it wasn’t meant to be out on my socials like that. I’m sure Wolverhampton is a lovely town. I’m sorry."
