Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark's potential return to women's basketball has been a major story over the past several months, centered on injuries she sustained in July and August. In the final minute of a July 15 game against the Connecticut Sun, Clark suffered a groin injury that was expected to keep her sidelined for at least a couple of weeks, with most anticipating her return for the final weeks of the regular season.
By the end of August, Clark had not returned, and it was revealed that she had also suffered an ankle injury on August 7. This new injury halted her rehabilitation process, further delaying her comeback. As days passed without updates, fans grew increasingly pessimistic about seeing her play again in the 2025 season.
On September 4, Clark confirmed via social media that her 2025 season was over after playing in just 13 games. Despite this announcement, some fans held out hope for a miraculous return, especially after the Fever advanced to the WNBA Semifinals.
Fever insider Scott Agness addressed these speculations during a September 25 podcast appearance, stating unequivocally that Clark is not returning. He emphasized that she is not in a position to play, referencing a video from a practice before Game 3 against the Atlanta Dream that showed Clark still favoring her left ankle and not running smoothly, which had sparked fan optimism.
Agness noted that while Clark has been able to shoot during her recovery, her ankle issue persists, indicating she is not ready for game action. This assessment confirms that a playoff return is impossible, and her ankle may still be bothering her, though she has time to fully heal before the 2026 season.
