Five MLS Games With Major Playoff Implications Ahead of Decision Day

The MLS Cup Playoffs are approaching at the end of October, with intense competition for playoff positions and seeding in the final matches of the regular season. The Philadelphia Union, despite being in a rebuilding year, have a chance to clinch their second Supporters' Shield in their first October match. Following a 6–0 win over D.C. United and other results, they can secure the top spot in MLS and the Eastern Conference by defeating New York City FC on Oct. 4, granting them hosting rights through the MLS Cup final.

Orlando City SC's late draw with FC Cincinnati kept them in contention to avoid the Eastern Conference Wild Card game, but their Matchday 38 clash with the Columbus Crew is crucial. If the Crew win, they could surpass Orlando in the standings, potentially forcing Orlando into a Wild Card spot, with the Crew holding a two-point deficit but a game in hand.

Real Salt Lake faces the Colorado Rapids on Oct. 4, with a win potentially tying them on points and moving them up to eighth place in the Western Conference. A Rapids victory would bolster their playoff chances and help them avoid the Wild Card match. A loss for Real Salt Lake would make it difficult to qualify, as they compete in a tight race with San Jose Earthquakes, FC Dallas, and Houston Dynamo, all within four points.

A postponed match between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Orlando City, rescheduled due to Orlando's Leagues Cup run, will take place in the penultimate week of the season, adding to the playoff implications.
