Former Lakers Champion Will be the X-Factor for Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies traded Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, multiple first-round draft picks, and a pick swap. Following the trade, the Grizzlies used some of the acquired picks to move up in the 2025 NBA Draft and select Cedric Coward. Additionally, the team bought out Cole Anthony due to their depth at the guard position and his contract value, after which he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks for a larger role.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope remains with the Grizzlies, where the organization believes he will complement stars Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. by providing perimeter defense, championship experience, and floor spacing. Although he is coming off a career-worst three-point shooting season with Orlando, Memphis is confident he can return to form, citing his strong shooting percentages in previous years and his fit alongside a dynamic playmaker like Morant.

The trade addresses both offensive and defensive needs for the Grizzlies. While Bane was a high-level scorer and shooter, his defensive limitations were a concern. Caldwell-Pope, by contrast, brings proven defensive ability and experience from two championship teams. His catch-and-shoot opportunities are expected to increase significantly playing alongside Morant, compared to his role in Orlando where playmaking was still developing.

Memphis sees Caldwell-Pope as a key piece in their title contention plans. If he performs to expectations, he will fill an important role on the wing. If not, younger players like Jaylen Wells and newly drafted Cedric Coward could step into larger responsibilities.
