Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who joined Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, is thoroughly enjoying his time at the club. The 28-year-old has settled quickly and expressed particular delight in working alongside world-class goalkeepers Alisson Becker and fellow new arrival Giorgi Mamardashvili as part of a goalkeeping group led by Xavi Valero.
Woodman described the experience as "brilliant," highlighting the hard work and mutual pushing during training, especially on their pre-season tour in Hong Kong. He emphasized the value of learning from Alisson, one of the world's best, and Mamardashvili, aiming to incorporate elements of their game into his own. He also appreciated discovering that the world-class players are "nice human beings and normal people" first, before witnessing their quality on the pitch. His personal goal is to reach that high standard quickly and contribute to the team.
Woodman also embraces the responsibility of mentoring young goalkeepers Armin Pecsi and Kornel Misciur on the tour. Drawing from his own experience of being helped by senior players like Tim Krul and Rob Elliot at Newcastle United, he aims to share the knowledge gained from his 300 senior appearances, many in the Championship, to assist the younger players in their careers.
Reflecting on his move to Liverpool after his contract with Preston North End (where he made 138 appearances) expired, Woodman called it "unbelievable." He praised the smooth transition, the warm welcome from everyone at the club, and the value of the tour for bonding. His signing happened quickly after receiving a message from Richard Hughes while on holiday, leaving him "absolutely delighted."
