The German Football League (DFL) has no plans to stage domestic league matches abroad, as stated by Hans-Joachim Watzke, chairman of the DFL supervisory board. This decision contrasts with efforts from Spain's La Liga, which hopes to play a match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami, and Italy's Serie A, which is planning a game between Milan and Como in Perth, Australia.
Watzke, who was recently re-elected to his position, firmly ruled out the possibility of German competitive matches being played overseas, emphasizing that his stance is clear and not open to interpretation. He mentioned that while UEFA has more people deciding on such matters, his opinion on keeping matches in Germany is definitive.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin expressed dissatisfaction with the idea of playing games abroad, stating that football should be played in Europe and fans should not have to travel long distances to watch their teams. He plans to discuss this issue with FIFA and other federations, hoping to prevent such moves unless there is absolutely no other option.
Additionally, FIFA was warned by the fan group Football Supporters Europe that sanctioning domestic league matches abroad would set a dangerous precedent, highlighting concerns from supporters about the potential impact on the sport.
