Gilardino: ‘Pisa have same ideas and objectives’ in Serie A

Alberto Gilardino has been appointed as the new head coach of Pisa, expressing alignment with the club's vision during his presentation press conference. He stated, "I found great enthusiasm at Pisa, we have the same ideas and same objectives," and emphasized his focus on work ethic and sacrifice as a young coach. While acknowledging the importance of the upcoming transfer market, his immediate priority is maximizing the potential of the existing squad.

Pisa is returning to Serie A after a 34-year absence, a significant and unexpected achievement. Gilardino highlighted the crucial role the passionate supporters will play in this transition, noting similarities in atmosphere to his previous club, Genoa, which he considers an advantage. Following discussions with the club director, he was convinced of Pisa's ambition, explicitly stating the primary objective is Serie A survival.

Gilardino replaces fellow 2006 World Cup winner Pippo Inzaghi, who departed after securing promotion. He confirmed speaking with Inzaghi several weeks prior, describing it as natural given their history as teammates. He praised Pisa's defensive solidity and determination to keep clean sheets under Inzaghi last season, qualities he deems essential for Serie A.

Tactically, Gilardino revealed a general preference for a three-man defense but stressed flexibility. He asserted, "There is nothing obligatory about it, the tactics must be based on the characteristics of the players at my disposal," indicating he has several tactical ideas in mind.

Reflecting on his first Serie A experience and subsequent dismissal at Genoa in November 2024, Gilardino noted that the team was above the relegation zone when he was fired. He stated he learned a lot from that experience, using the time since to update his knowledge, study other coaches, and reflect on his ideas.
