Hall of Famer Explains Why Anthony Edwards is so Difficult to Play Against

Hall of Fame guard Mitch Richmond expressed a strong desire to have competed against Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards. Richmond, a six-time All-Star known for his scoring prowess and competitiveness, declared on Byron Scott's Fast Break, "I would have liked to play against Anthony Edwards," viewing a hypothetical matchup as stellar.

Richmond analyzed the potential physical matchup, noting his slight height advantage (6-foot-5 vs. Edwards' 6-foot-4) but acknowledging Edwards' superior strength (225 lbs vs. Richmond's 215 lbs). He emphasized Edwards' difficulty as an opponent, stating, "He’s such a tough cover," and vowed he would be physical with him.

Richmond admitted finding Edwards' game challenging to exploit, highlighting that Edwards is an exceptional two-way player, unlike many score-first guards who struggle defensively. Consequently, Richmond outlined a unique offensive strategy against Edwards: "I’m not going to be trying to go in between the legs and all that. I’m going one way. If you stop me that way, I’m putting my body on you and then I’m going the other way."

While Richmond wouldn't guarantee victory in a head-to-head matchup, he stressed he would relish every second of the duel against the 23-year-old Edwards.
