Harold Alarcon ‘stays in the moment’ as late-game hero for UP Fighting Maroons vs UST

The UP Fighting Maroons secured a narrow 89-88 victory over the UST Growling Tigers in the second round of UAAP Season 88, held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Wednesday, with veteran guard Harold Alarcon playing a pivotal role in the win.

Alarcon, a graduating senior, demonstrated exceptional composure in the clutch, scoring 8 of his total 22 points in the fourth quarter and hitting the go-ahead basket with just 24 seconds remaining to lift UP to the win, which elevated them to solo second place in the standings.

In a closely contested game, Alarcon engaged in a back-and-forth battle with UST's standout rookie Collins Akowe, who recorded a double-double with 26 points and 16 rebounds, but Alarcon's late-game heroics proved decisive as UP overcame an 87-88 deficit after UST's free throws.

Reflecting on his performance, Alarcon attributed his calmness under pressure to his five years of college experience, emphasizing that it allowed him to stay composed and focused during critical moments without feeling nervous or rushed.

Beyond his scoring, Alarcon contributed 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, while teammate Noy Remogat added 19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals to support the Fighting Maroons' efforts in the thrilling encounter.
