The Miami Heat have repeatedly pursued Kevin Durant over the past decade without success, but they are reportedly considering another attempt in 2026 if he becomes a free agent. According to Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, the team views Durant as a "possibility" for that year.
However, signing Durant next summer could be a significant mistake for the Heat. If he does not extend with the Houston Rockets beforehand, he would likely seek a major contract before the NBA's over-38 rule—which restricts long-term deals for players aged 38 or older—comes into effect. This could lead the Heat to offer a costly multi-year deal too late in Durant's career.
Despite financial complexities involving existing contracts like Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, and Nikola Jović, the Heat's front office might still find a way to pursue Durant due to their longstanding interest. The bigger issue, though, is that adding Durant would not make the Heat immediate championship contenders in the Eastern Conference, even if acquired without sacrificing assets.
Ultimately, committing substantial cap space to Durant at this stage may not align with the team's championship ambitions, as it would unlikely propel them into top-tier contention.
