The Phoenix Mercury has seen multiple players wear jersey No. 5 throughout its history. Dena Head was the first, wearing it in 2000 after joining the Mercury following her selection as the first pick in the Elite Draft by the Utah Starzz and international play. Head played 17 games for Phoenix.
Kristen Veal became the next No. 5 after the Mercury drafted her 13th overall in the 2001 WNBA Draft. She played two seasons with the team, averaging four points and 4.3 assists in her rookie year.
Leilani Mitchell, drafted 25th by the Mercury in 2008 but initially traded, later wore the number. She played for Phoenix in 2015 (averaging 6.7 points, 2.7 assists, 2.1 rebounds in 34 games), left for Washington in 2016, and returned from 2017 to 2019. During her 2016 absence, Sonja Petrovic wore No. 5, averaging 5.1 points in 31 games. In her final 2019 Mercury season, Mitchell averaged 12.8 points, four assists, and three rebounds, winning the Most Improved Player award for a record second time in the WNBA.
Following Mitchell, two other players wore No. 5: Shey Peddy during her stint with the team, and Karlie Samuelson, who was the last player to wear the number in 2022. Mitchell holds the record for the longest tenure as the Mercury's No. 5.
