England won the Women's Euro 2025 championship, defeating Spain in a penalty shootout during the final held at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday, July 27th. This victory reversed the result from the previous year's men's Euro 2024 final, where Spain had beaten England.
The tournament highlighted the significant growth of women's soccer in Europe, evidenced by a substantial increase in the total prize money. UEFA announced a total prize purse of €41 million (over $48 million) for Euro 2025. This represents a 156% increase compared to the previous Women's European Championship held in England in 2022.
Each of the 16 participating nations received €1.8 million ($2.11 million) just for taking part in the tournament. Notably, this participation fee was almost identical to the amount awarded for winning the final match itself.
As champions, England received an additional €1.75 million ($2.05 million) for winning the final. The runner-up, Spain, was awarded €850,000 (just under $1 million). By winning their second successive European Championship, England's total earnings from the tournament reached €5 million ($5.86 million). This was €100,000 (approximately $120,000) less than the maximum possible amount due to their loss against France in their opening group game.
