During a discussion about which era of James's career was the greatest, Teague asserted that James was at his "most dominant" while with the Miami Heat. He then alleged that James used steroids during that time, specifically stating, "He was on steroids... Legit, he was on steroids. Allegedly." Teague claimed that James sat out for approximately three weeks citing back pain when the NBA began testing for Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and returned "skinny."

Teague's allegation about James using performance-enhancing drugs quickly gained widespread attention and went viral on social media. This prompted Teague to clarify his remarks a few hours later.
