Karl-Anthony Towns reacted on social media to unsubstantiated rumors suggesting South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley could fill the New York Knicks' head coaching vacancy, specifically responding to a joke about how Staley might handle his foul trouble.
The Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau shortly after the team was eliminated from its first conference finals appearance in 25 years. Fouls were a significant problem for Towns throughout the season, acknowledged by both Towns and Thibodeau as an area needing improvement. Thibodeau emphasized the need for Towns to distinguish between "good aggressive fouls" and "cheap" ones requiring discipline, while Towns admitted he needed to make better decisions.
However, fouls remained an issue for Towns into the playoffs, where he accumulated the second-highest total (78 fouls) behind Aaron Nesmith. The Knicks organization ultimately fired Thibodeau after falling short of the NBA Finals, partly due to "doubt" about his ability to lead them to a championship following the loss to the Pacers.
Since Thibodeau's dismissal, the Knicks have formally interviewed coaching candidates James Borrego, Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins, and Micah Nori. They were reportedly denied interviews with Billy Donovan, Jason Kidd, Ime Udoka, Chris Finch, and Quin Snyder.
The next Knicks head coach will be tasked with winning a championship, and Towns' social media reaction suggests he believes the new coach might also focus on helping him address his persistent foul troubles.
