According to reports from BBC Sport and STV, Kevin Muscat, the current head coach of Shanghai Port and an A-Leagues legend, is the leading candidate to become the next Rangers head coach, potentially replacing Russell Martin at the Scottish club. This speculation has intensified after Steven Gerrard ruled himself out of the running, with sources indicating that Rangers have already held discussions with Muscat about the position.
Muscat is currently managing Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League, where the team is on track to secure a third consecutive title, holding a two-point lead at the top of the table with only four rounds remaining. It is believed that he will not depart from his role in Shanghai until after the conclusion of their title bid next month, ensuring he sees through the current season.
Muscat has a personal history with Rangers, having played for the club during the 2002-03 season, which adds to his familiarity with the team's culture and expectations. Former Rangers coach Alex McLeish, who originally signed Muscat in 2002, has publicly endorsed him, stating that Muscat possesses the necessary character, personality, and understanding of the club to excel in the role.
This marks the third instance where Muscat has been linked with the Rangers head coach position; he previously narrowly missed out on the job to Philippe Clement in 2023 and was considered as a candidate again prior to Russell Martin's appointment in June, highlighting ongoing interest in his capabilities.
