The New York Knicks, under head coach Mike Brown, continue to search for assistant coaches. After recently adding Riccardo Fois and Charles Allen (both former colleagues of Brown from Sacramento), they targeted Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Pablo Prigioni, a former Knicks player. However, Prigioni chose to stay with Minnesota.
As a result, the Knicks have shifted their focus to Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Brendan O'Connor, according to SNY's Ian Begley. O'Connor is noted for his strong defensive expertise, having worked under Tyronn Lue and Doc Rivers during his 12 years with the Clippers. His coaching career began as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons in 2000.
Begley reported that O'Connor would be a valuable addition due to his lengthy experience and defensive mindset. While the Knicks have prioritized improving their offense this offseason through free agency and hiring Brown, they recognize the need for defensive improvement as well. Even if O'Connor is hired to bolster the defense, the Knicks are expected to continue looking for another assistant to help on offense. Previous targets reportedly included James Borrego (NOP) and Jay Triano (DAL).
Currently, there is no indication that a hiring decision is imminent. The Knicks are continuing to explore their options, but O'Connor is considered high on their wishlist as they aim to build Brown's coaching staff.
