Kylian Mbappé has forcefully denied a report from French satirical newspaper Le Canard enchaîné alleging he refused to participate as a torchbearer in the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony because he wouldn't be the final bearer. The report suggested he was "disappointed at not being at the center" and mocked him with the line: "You can’t always be No. 10."
Mbappé responded sarcastically on social media three days later, tweeting: "LOL 😂. You forgot to mention that I also wanted to be the point guard for the French basketball team... I was just relaxing on vacation on the other side of the world. No reason to be the last torchbearer since I have no connection to the Olympics." He emphasized the absurdity of the claims and his physical distance from the event.
The denial comes amid a busy 2024 summer for Mbappé, who transferred from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid in June before captaining France at the European Championships. Though he played through a broken nose to reach the semifinals, he was blocked by Real Madrid from participating in the Olympic soccer tournament—a decision he reportedly found disappointing, contradicting claims of Olympic disinterest.
