Ben Simmons, currently a free agent, is seeking to continue his NBA career despite a decline from his All-Star peak in 2021 and subsequent mediocre performances with the Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers. While his future once looked promising, he now faces a more uncertain reality. However, he reportedly has interest from four NBA teams, indicating he has options to extend his career.
One of the teams interested in signing Simmons is the New York Knicks. Unfortunately for the Knicks, Simmons does not appear to have mutual interest in playing for them. According to NBA insider Ary on X, Simmons is also ruling out the Phoenix Suns. Ary indicated that sources suggest Simmons is leaning towards signing with the Boston Celtics, though this is not confirmed, and the Sacramento Kings are also a possibility.
Simmons rejecting the Knicks might actually benefit them. Despite his physical tools as a ball-handler, he comes with significant flaws. He is widely considered practically unplayable during the playoffs due to his unwillingness to take shots and low shooting success rate, making him a net-negative on the court. His weakness at the free-throw line also makes him a target for opposing teams in late-game situations, and Clippers coach Ty Lue has cited his lack of aggression as a persistent issue in recent years. Furthermore, with the Knicks financially constrained (sitting just over $3 million under the second apron), it might be better for them to seek a player offering better value for money.
