The Cleveland Browns, who previously had the league's top defense under coordinator Jim Schwartz featuring star EDGE rusher Myles Garrett, are always seeking roster improvements. General Manager Andrew Berry, aiming to strengthen a defensive tackle group that struggled last year, might consider recently released player Christian Wilkins. The Browns reportedly tried to acquire Wilkins during free agency two offseasons ago.
Wilkins was unexpectedly released by the Las Vegas Raiders early in training camp. The Raiders stated the release was "in the best interests of the organization" due to "no clear path or plan for future return to play" from Wilkins. This move voided $35 million of Wilkins' contract.
The release stems from a significant injury dispute. Wilkins suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot during Week 5 last season and underwent initial surgery with an expected 3-4 month recovery. However, his recovery stalled. The Raiders wanted the 29-year-old Wilkins to undergo a second surgery, believing it was the best path for proper healing. Wilkins repeatedly declined this recommendation, opting instead for a rehabilitation routine.
This refusal reportedly caused tension within the Raiders organization, leading to questions about Wilkins' commitment from "some players, coaches, and executives." With the standoff unresolved as training camp approached, the Raiders placed Wilkins on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list shortly before camp opened, ultimately releasing him soon after.
