Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton declared his ambition for the team to field the NFL's best defense this season during remarks after Friday's training camp practice. He acknowledged the defense's efficiency last year but emphasized possessing the necessary personnel, players, and coaches to reach the top spot. Bolton stated that achieving this requires consistent execution week-to-week to win games and ultimately reach the season's "end game," citing it as his motivation.
Bolton recently secured a new three-year, $45 million contract before free agency. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, whom Bolton described as a "super loving, big-hearted coach" and a "father figure," praised Bolton as "the Patrick Mahomes of the defense." Bolton highlighted their strong, growing relationship over four years, focusing on maximizing the unit's strengths and playing fast, crediting Spagnuolo's belief and support.
Bolton sees retaining homegrown defensive talent like himself as crucial for success, fostering team continuity. He noted this was evident during offseason OTAs, where the veteran group picked up where they left off without needing basic instruction refinements. This continuity enables advanced communication and understanding on the field, allowing players to "read each other's minds."
While valuing continuity, Bolton also stressed the need for contributions from newcomers. He praised rookie defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott, who has rotated with starters, for his intelligence, understanding of defensive assignments, alignment, and lack of mental errors in the early days of camp. Bolton also mentioned fifth-round linebacker Jeff Bassa as another promising rookie in the group.
