National University has reportedly appointed Regine Diego as the new head coach of its women's volleyball team for UAAP Season 88, replacing Sherwin Meneses who led the team to a championship in the previous season. The change was initially hinted during the Shakey's Super League press conference on September 3, where Diego was introduced as assistant team manager while Meneses was absent.
Meneses' departure was later confirmed through a Facebook post by his wife, Nerissa, who clarified that he had only signed a one-year contract with NU, which concluded after Season 87. She emphasized there were no conflicts with the university's management. Although NU's school publication reported the news, the university itself has not yet made an official announcement.
During his one-year tenure, Meneses achieved significant success, guiding NU to its third championship in four years with a Finals sweep against La Salle, powered by key players Alyssa Solomon and Bella Belen. He also led the team to win the SSL National Invitationals crown in July before stepping down to focus on his role with the Creamline Cool Smashers in the PVL.
Regine Diego's appointment marks a return to her roots with NU, as she previously coached the NU-Nazareth Lady Bullpups in the pre-pandemic years and played a foundational role in developing the school's pipeline of top-tier recruits. Her hiring is seen as more than just an interim solution, reflecting a strategic move for the program.
