The Phoenix Suns selected Duke center Khaman Maluach with the No. 10 overall pick in the NBA Draft last month, adding youth to their roster. Although only 18 years old, Maluach has the potential to contribute in the upcoming season.
However, Bleacher Report writer Jonathan Wasserman named Maluach a "loser" of the Las Vegas Summer League, citing struggles. Wasserman noted it seemed odd the Suns drafted Maluach then traded for center Mark Williams, but understood after observing Maluach's summer league performance. Maluach averaged 4.0 fouls in just 23.3 minutes per game and struggled offensively. While it was encouraging to see him attempt 13 three-pointers (after only 16 all season at Duke), he is not yet a reliable outside threat. His size, length, and movement were functional for rim protection and catching lobs, but summer league exposed his overall rawness and lack of physicality in the post.
Wasserman emphasized Maluach's development is a long-term project, highlighting his impressive physical tools (7'2" height, 9'6" reach) and some shotmaking range. In the short term, however, Wasserman believes Maluach is likely limited to an energy or backup role.
Maluach faces significant adjustments transitioning from college to the NBA but possesses the necessary tools for success. The Suns are well-positioned to develop him, as he is their only top-10 draft pick on the roster. Maluach will spend the next few months improving his game before the Suns' training camp begins in the fall.
