The Detroit Pistons have shifted from a rebuilding team focused on cap space to a playoff contender, leading to reduced patience for developing non-core young talent. This change prompted the franchise to waive guard Ron Harper Jr. on Thursday to create roster space after signing free agent wing Colby Jones to a two-way contract.
Harper appeared in only one NBA game for Detroit last season, recording four points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Despite limited NBA opportunities, he excelled in the G League, averaging 16.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists across 37 games with the Motor City Cruise and Maine Celtics, while shooting 39% from three-point range. His standout performance included setting a Cruise franchise record with 11 three-pointers in a single game.
Throughout 56 career G League games, Harper established himself as an elite perimeter shooter, converting 38% of his three-point attempts (157/413). With Detroit's two-way contract slots now occupied by Jones, Daniss Jenkins, and Tolu Smith, Harper must seek opportunities elsewhere in the league. His proven shooting ability makes him a strong candidate to join another team's training camp this fall.
