LaLiga and Latin American anti-piracy group Alianza collaborated to execute multiple arrest warrants against sellers of the illegal IPTV service Magis TV in Argentina. Working with Argentine law enforcement, simultaneous raids occurred in five regions, including Chubut, Mendoza, and Río Negro. These raids targeted local distributors of premium Magis TV packages, with orders issued by the Court of Guarantees No. 4 of San Isidro, where LaLiga is a plaintiff. Two locations operated by local internet service provider UV Mundo Digital were specifically targeted.
Latin America represents a significant market for LaLiga due to its large Spanish-speaking population and passionate football fanbase, with an estimated 98.2 million broadband households. However, piracy is rampant, affecting approximately 40 million households across the region. Argentina has 11.3 million broadband households, with 4.8 million (42.6%) engaging in piracy, placing it below Mexico (46%) and Ecuador (58.6%) but above Brazil (38.4%).
UV Mundo Digital, an ISP based in Trelew and Rawson (Chubut province), was identified as a key target. LaLiga alleges the ISP actively sold MagisTV Pro subscriptions, promoting them via its website, social media, and retail stores "under the guise of legality." During the investigation, police were reportedly offered a "different internet service" at UV Mundo Digital's premises, linked to MagisTV Pro. The ISP's owner is now considered a fugitive.
The operation received assistance from Mercado Libre and payment platform Mercado Pago, which LaLiga commended for their collaboration. LaLiga President Javier Tebas praised the cooperation of Alianza, LaLiga, and supportive entities like Mercado Libre, stating collaboration is key to eradicating piracy. Conversely, he strongly criticized UV Mundo Digital and CABASE (the non-profit ISP association it belongs to), accusing CABASE of being influenced by ISPs that violate legal standards and refuse judicial orders.
