Liverpool could pay up to £116m to sign German international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, a potential British record transfer fee. They have also acquired French forward Hugo Ekitike for an initial £69m, potentially rising to £79m. Liverpool are currently the Premier League's top spenders this summer, having invested £269m, which also includes signings like Milos Kerkez (£40.8m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£35m).
Premier League clubs have collectively spent £1.63bn on transfers since the window opened in June. Over £1bn of this spending comes from the traditional 'big six' clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham. Last season's top four clubs account for five of the biggest spenders this summer, with Manchester United being the outlier after finishing 15th.
Arsenal are close to signing Sporting striker Victor Gyokeres for £63.5m. This deal would push their total spending past £200m, having already spent £137m on players including midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m) and winger Noni Madueke (just under £50m). Newcastle forward Alexander Isak is reportedly considering leaving the club and could cost up to £150m, with Liverpool maintaining an interest.
Chelsea are the second-highest spenders at just over £212m, with major signings including Brighton forward Joao Pedro (£60m), Borussia Dortmund left-winger Jamie Gittens (£56m), and Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap (£30m). Manchester City, having spent about £127m early in the window, focused on midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, and attacker Rayan Cherki.
Manchester United, despite finishing 15th last season, have spent £133.5m, largely on forwards Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) and Matheus Cunha (Wolves). Tottenham, who finished 17th but won the Europa League (beating Manchester United in the final), sacked manager Ange Postecoglou. Liverpool's current spending spree contrasts sharply with their 2024-25 campaign, where their only major signings cost a combined total of less than £40m.
