The NBA offseason has slowed significantly, with most players signed or traded, but Boston Celtics free agent center Al Horford remains unsigned. Despite strong, persistent rumors linking him to the Golden State Warriors throughout the offseason, and Celtics President Brad Stevens publicly stating Horford's time in Boston is effectively over, no deal has been finalized.
Stevens confirmed the Celtics made offers to retain both Horford and Luke Kornet but acknowledged it's unlikely Horford returns, refraining from absolute statements until a final decision is made.
The delay in Horford potentially joining the Warriors stems from Golden State's need to resolve the contract situation of their own restricted free agent, forward Jonathan Kuminga. The Warriors are the only team yet to sign or trade for any new players this summer, largely due to this impasse. Kuminga is reportedly in no hurry to sign unless presented with a compelling offer.
Neither Kuminga nor the Warriors currently holds significant leverage in negotiations. Kuminga lacks urgency, while the Warriors have little motivation to make a substantial offer for a player who hasn't consistently been part of their rotation. A sign-and-trade involving Kuminga is complicated by the Warriors' proximity to the first salary cap apron, which they could be hard-capped at if such a move occurs. The team is currently $25 million below that apron and has six open roster spots, but they remain on the sidelines in free agency until Kuminga's situation is settled.
Consequently, significant updates on Al Horford's future are not expected until Jonathan Kuminga's next contract is agreed upon, which may take some time.
