The 2025-26 NBA season has just begun, with trade discussions already emerging, and the OKC Thunder are highlighted as a team capable of significantly enhancing their roster due to their abundant resources.
According to Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey, each of the 30 NBA teams was assigned one realistic and one dream trade target. For the Thunder, the dream target is Giannis Antetokounmpo, a highly sought-after player, while the realistic target is Lauri Markkanen, who is also considered a dream acquisition for other teams like the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.
Markkanen, a 27-year-old established All-Star, is performing exceptionally well for the Utah Jazz, averaging 33.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists with strong shooting percentages. Bailey suggests that acquiring him could be relatively easy for OKC, as a trade package involving Isaiah Hartenstein's $28.5 million salary, another contract such as Lu Dort's $18.2 million, and a combination of their 13 future first-round draft picks could match Markkanen's $46.39 million salary and outbid other offers.
Despite the feasibility of this trade, Bailey notes that the Thunder may not need to pursue such a deal, as they are currently undefeated at 7-0 and playing dominantly. However, their position gives them the unique ability to make major trades if they choose, effectively realizing the aspirations of other teams in the league.
