Thomas Müller has declined a transfer to LAFC and is now negotiating with the Vancouver Whitecaps, according to reports from Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk and British sports journalist Ben Jacobs. Talks are focused on securing Müller’s MLS discovery rights, currently held by FC Cincinnati, which Vancouver must acquire to finalize the move. While no agreement on the rights transfer has been reached yet, negotiations between Vancouver and Müller are advancing toward a contract lasting until the end of 2026.
MLS rules allow clubs to claim up to seven players annually via "discovery rights," granting exclusive negotiation privileges. Since FC Cincinnati holds Müller’s rights, any other MLS team interested in signing him must purchase those rights. Despite this hurdle, the league typically facilitates such transfers when a player expresses a strong club preference, and it is confirmed Müller will join MLS regardless of the outcome.
Previous reports indicated another MLS club besides LAFC was pursuing the 2014 World Cup winner, now confirmed as Vancouver. LAFC is definitively out of contention, leaving Vancouver as the sole negotiator working to resolve the final details of the transfer.
