Reports: Liberty's Stewart avoids major leg injury

New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart avoided a significant injury to her right leg sustained during Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Sparks, according to reports. Medical imaging revealed no major issues, and Stewart will travel with the team on their upcoming four-game road trip starting Monday in Dallas.

Stewart left the game nearly 3.5 minutes into the first quarter of the 101-99 loss. She appeared to injure her leg while running up the court, exiting with three points and one rebound. She went to the locker room and did not return to the bench for the remainder of the game.

Liberty coach Sandy Brondello stated post-game, "No update, hopefully she'll be OK," following the defeat that ended the team's five-game winning streak. The game was the second half of a back-to-back for New York. Stewart had also scored just six points in Friday's win over Phoenix, though she contributed eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and two steals in that game.

Entering Saturday, Stewart was averaging 19 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game this season, helping New York achieve a 17-7 record, the second-best in the league. The two-time WNBA MVP had not missed a game this season prior to the injury. After playing mostly at home in July, New York faces five road games in its next six.

The Liberty also reported two other injuries: Kennedy Burke experienced cramps, and Leonie Fiebich is managing a hand injury suffered against Phoenix. Coach Brondello commented on Fiebich's status, "She's tough and resilient, she pushed through it."
