Rob Manfred clarifies perception of wanting MLB salary cap in new CBA

Attention is shifting toward a potential MLB lockout after the 2026 season when the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) expires. The central contentious issue revolves around implementing a salary cap, creating a significant divide between team owners and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA). Commissioner Rob Manfred aims to avoid a lockout, especially given his planned retirement in 2029, and is actively seeking compromise.

Manfred's strategy involves reframing discussions around competitive balance rather than directly advocating for a salary cap. In talks with players, he avoids using the term "salary cap," instead focusing on media business challenges and fan concerns about competitive imbalance. He emphasizes that the current system contributes to payroll disparities between high-spending and low-spending teams, urging both sides to approach negotiations with open minds to find solutions beyond a salary cap.

The MLBPA shows no immediate willingness to alter its opposition to a salary cap. Meanwhile, MLB and ESPN have mutually ended their decades-long television rights agreement. Multiple networks and streaming services are reportedly interested in acquiring rights to "Sunday Night Baseball," the Wild Card Series, and the Home Run Derby. Negotiations for a reworked deal had occurred but remained unresolved as of the All-Star Game timeframe.
