Chicago Sky star Angel Reese is one technical foul away from facing a mandatory one-game suspension under WNBA rules, which dictate an automatic suspension upon reaching eight technical fouls. Reese currently has seven technical fouls assessed against her this season.
Sky head coach Tyler Marsh acknowledged the situation, revealing that the team is actively working to have some of Reese's technical fouls rescinded. Marsh stated, "We've done our work on our side to try to get a couple of those rescinded in the moment and beyond, and that's up to the league's discretion." He also commented on the difficulty of controlling passion during the game, calling it "part of the entertainment." The success of the team's appeal to the league remains uncertain.
If the technicals are not rescinded, Reese must avoid another technical to prevent the suspension. Furthermore, WNBA rules stipulate that after reaching eight technicals, players receive an additional one-game suspension for every two subsequent technical fouls.
Adding context to her availability, Reese is currently listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Indiana Fever due to an injury. She has recently missed games because of this injury. Fever star Caitlin Clark is also ruled out for the same game with a groin injury.
Despite the injury and technical foul situation, Reese is having a strong second WNBA season. Through 22 games, she is averaging 13.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting 44.8 percent from the field.
