Legendary German forward Thomas Müller is reportedly close to joining Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS, choosing them despite serious interest from LAFC and rejecting a move to FC Cincinnati. LAFC has close ties to his long-time club, Bayern Munich.
FC Cincinnati holds discovery rights for Müller, which Vancouver must acquire before a deal with the player can be finalized.
The 35-year-old Müller, who spent his entire European career at Bayern Munich, is expected to sign a short-term deal with Vancouver before the MLS roster freeze. Sources indicate Müller was flattered by LAFC's offer but opted for a "fresh environment" and a "quieter challenge" as he nears the end of his career.
His decision to choose Vancouver over LAFC is surprising given the strong partnership between Bayern Munich and LAFC, which many thought would facilitate his move to the US market. Instead, the 2014 World Cup winner is forging his own path in MLS away from Los Angeles.
Bayern fans are familiar with Vancouver Whitecaps as it was the former club of current Bayern player Alphonso Davies.
