The Detroit Tigers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 10-4 on Sunday, ending their six-game losing streak and halting a stretch where they had lost 12 of their previous 13 games. Toronto fell to 8-2 since the All-Star break.
Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty (6-10) earned the win, pitching six scoreless innings. He allowed a double and four singles, striking out seven and walking one, ending a seven-start winless streak.
Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer (1-1), pitching on his 41st birthday, took the loss. He allowed three hits over seven innings, including a three-run homer to Gleyber Torres, and struck out 11 with no walks. Torres' homer came in the third inning after singles by Dillon Dingler and Parker Meadows put runners on base.
The Tigers secured the victory with a seven-run eighth inning, scoring six of those runs after two outs were recorded.
Toronto scored all four of their runs in the ninth inning off Tigers reliever Luke Jackson, who was making his debut with Detroit.
Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette had five of Toronto's ten hits, extending his on-base streak to 19 games.
A key defensive moment occurred in the seventh inning with Toronto threatening (runners on corners, two out). Reliever Brenan Hanifee induced a hard-hit line drive (108 mph) from George Springer, but center fielder Parker Meadows made the catch.
The loss prevented the Blue Jays from achieving their first four-game series sweep against the Tigers in franchise history.
Up next, the Blue Jays travel to Baltimore for a four-game series starting Monday, with RHP Chris Bassitt (11-4, 3.88) scheduled to start the opener. The Tigers remain home for a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, facing former teammate LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-6, 5.50) on Monday night.
