The US and EU have announced a new trade deal imposing a blanket 15% tariff on most EU goods imported to the US, effective this Friday. This replaces previously threatened 30% tariffs by President Trump.
Both President Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the agreement after meeting in Turnberry, Scotland. Trump described it as potentially "the biggest deal ever made."
Analysts note both sides can claim victory: the EU avoids higher tariffs while the US is projected to earn up to $90 billion in tariff revenue. Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan publicly welcomed the deal, stating it "eliminates present unclearness."
Separately, US President Trump is scheduled to meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer later today at Trump's Turnberry golf course in Ayrshire. Discussions are expected to focus on Gaza, with Starmer likely to press Trump on ceasefire efforts.
