UAAP: No Buzz, All Business — Is Ateneo Built for a Deep Run?

As UAAP Season 88 approaches, the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles are positioned as a young, under-the-radar team that could disrupt the league's established contenders. Despite lacking big-name veterans, the retooled roster is focused on outworking and outlasting opponents through energy and execution rather than star power.

Head coach Tab Baldwin emphasized the need for quick adaptation from his unproven but talented players, acknowledging the team's mix of inexperience and potential. This follows a disappointing Season 87 where Ateneo, after a run of four titles in five finals appearances from 2017–2022, missed the Final Four for the first time since 2013.

A key addition to the squad is Kymani Ladi, a 6-foot-7 Filipino-American wing player who chose Ateneo over a potential NBA Summer League opportunity. Ladi views his one-year stint as a chance to contribute to the team’s success while connecting with his heritage, stating he aims to make the most of his limited time without positioning himself as a "savior."

The Blue Eagles will begin their Season 88 campaign against the FEU Tamaraws on September 20 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, hoping to leverage their low-profile preparation and renewed focus into a strong comeback.
