Vinicius Jr's new contract talks with Real Madrid break down owing to one key reason

Real Madrid experienced a trophyless 2024/25 season, finishing behind Barcelona in La Liga, exiting the Champions League in the knockout stages, and failing to win domestic cups. This disappointing outcome followed high expectations after the signing of Kylian Mbappe.

The club now faces a significant contract issue with Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior. Despite playing a decisive role in recent successes and being expected to renew his contract shortly after the Club World Cup, talks have collapsed. Vinicius has demanded a salary increase placing him in the same pay tier as Kylian Mbappe.

Real Madrid's leadership, caught off guard by this demand, is currently unwilling to approve such a significant raise. The club reportedly fears that meeting Vinicius's request could destabilize the wage structure within their already star-heavy squad. Vinicius technically remains under contract until June 2027.

However, the player's representatives insist his current role and global stature warrant better compensation. Reports indicate Vinicius feels his contributions make him one of the world's best players and he is unwilling to accept less than top-tier pay.

Complicating the standoff, a Saudi Pro League club has reportedly prepared an enormous €1 billion package (approximately $1.1 billion) in an attempt to lure Vinicius away, making Real Madrid's decision even more difficult.
