Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard VJ Edgecombe made a historic NBA debut against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night, breaking records previously held by LeBron James and Allen Iverson. The 20-year-old scored 14 points in the first quarter, surpassing James' record of 12 points in the first quarter of an NBA debut set in 2003.
Edgecombe finished the game with 34 points, setting a new record for the most points in a Sixers rookie debut, eclipsing Iverson's 30 points from 1996. His 34 points also rank as the third-highest in NBA history for a rookie debut, behind only Frank Selvy (35 points in 1954) and Wilt Chamberlain (43 points in 1959).
In addition to his scoring, Edgecombe contributed seven rebounds, three assists, one steal, and five three-pointers, playing a key role in the Sixers' narrow 117-116 victory over the Celtics. During the first quarter, he scored 10 consecutive points at one stage and executed a notable dunk after recognizing a mismatch against Celtics defender Xavier Tillman.
Selected as the No. 3 overall pick from Baylor University, Edgecombe has been recognized by Sixers president Daryl Morey as having All-Star potential. Fans will have another opportunity to watch him play in the team's home opener against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night.
