‘We’ve got a title to defend’: Owen eyes consecutive BBL trophies

Hobart Hurricanes opener Mitch Owen, the hero of their BBL|14 title win, is shifting focus from last season's success to defending the championship in BBL|15. Despite cherishing the memory of their maiden Big Bash victory, Owen emphasizes that the team's priority is now retaining the trophy next season.

The Hurricanes have actively assembled their squad during the off-season, securing key signings to bolster their title defense. Middle-order batter Tim David rejected offers from other clubs to sign a two-year contract extension. Although Caleb Jewell departed in a trade with Melbourne Renegades, Hobart strengthened significantly by acquiring Beau Webster and Jake Weatherald. Webster returns after previously debuting for the club, while Weatherald brings recent state-level experience with Tasmania.

Owen expresses strong confidence in the team's prospects, stating the Hurricanes "couldn't be in a better position" for back-to-back titles. With 15 of 18 squad spots filled for BBL|15, including retained stars like Nathan Ellis and Matthew Wade, the team aims to lift the trophy again on January 25, 2026. Owen highlighted collective excitement about the opportunity to achieve consecutive championships.
